General Puppy Guidelines

  1. If you are traveling alone on Puppy Pick Day, you will want to bring along a crate or puppy car seat, as well as a towel in case of car sickness or accidents.

  2. Puppies need lots of rest. The first few days to weeks after taking your new puppy home can be stressful for him/her.

  3. Patience and establishing a new routine is very important for new doodle owners. Doodles are highly intelligent.

  4. For the first few weeks, feed your puppy whenever he/she is hungry during the day. Take food and water away 2 hours before bedtime. They will need time to empty out so that they will have a restful night’s sleep. After a few weeks, you can change to 3 X day feedings, and then later to 2 x day feedings.

  5. I highly recommend bell training for your new puppy. Patience and consistency is key! Try to keep him/her contained in a smaller area and do not give them free run of the house. Accidents can continue up to 6 months of age. Have patience and try not to stress your puppy.

  6. Doodles require lots of brushing. This is a great time for bonding between you and your new puppy. There are many great videos out there to teach you proper technique for brushing your puppy if you are unfamiliar with doodle coats. I recommend having a metal comb, slicker brush, and pin brush on hand when your doodle puppy comes home.

  7. When you are ready to start leash walking your puppy, I recommend using a vest harness instead of a regular collar.

  8. Remember, your new puppy should never be taken into public places until he/she is fully vaccinated. Parks and stores should be completely off limits until your veteranarian says that it is safe for your puppy.

  9. Do not let your puppy jump from high places or participate in strenuous running/jumping.

  10. Offer chew toys to your teething puppy.

  11. We will always be available to answer any questions you may have and to give you the best advice we can offer.
